A University dedicated in imparting creative and critical thinking as part of the essential skills needed for living and working successfully in a dynamic society. Also, to participate in the discovery, transmission, preservation, enhancement of knowledge and to stimulate the intellectual participation of students in the economic, sociocultural, scientific and technological development of Kenya and the community of nations.
Bomet University College is the first public University in Bomet County. It is strategically placed at the heart of Bomet County. Its establishment is a step towards realization of a fully-fledged University in line with the government policy to establish at least one University in every County. The County Education Board (CEB) recommended the establishment of a University in Bomet County. Subsequently Moi University was approached to consider starting a campus in Bomet that would eventually be upgraded with time to a University status. The then Vice Chancellor, Prof. Richard K. Mibey sent a University technical team to assess the viability. After consultation with Bomet County leaders and other stakeholders, Bomet TTI, which was still under construction, was handed over to Moi University in March 2016 to start a campus. Thereafter it became operational and the first cohort of GSSP students were admitted on 31st August 2016 to Bomet College.
Bomet County has a huge population and other unique resources that merit establishment of a university. Indeed, the national Government resources to put up the college and the community fully supported by giving land in Bomet town. Some sections of the leadership were not supportive. BUC in the initial stages started with five programmes of Moi University and this is envisaged to grow to 11 schools and five centres of research in the next five years. BUC endeavours to develop creativity and innovation to enable students to fit in the job market, by taking a practical approach to learning emphasizing the element of attachments and field work in training of its students.
The University College is expected not only to help the Government of Kenya increase access to university education but also to put greater emphasis on hands-on training for skills development and academic excellence. The practical orientation will be attained through more contact hours of field work and industrial attachment expected to give the students more holistic understanding of the environment in which they will operate. In so doing, BUC will produce students that are capable of entrepreneurship, knowledge creation, self-employment and job creation rather than relying on formal employment. Indeed this is in line with the Kenya Vision 2030 which emphasizes job creation and industrial growth through exploitation of national skills and resources.
As a mentoring University, Moi University was established in 1984 as the second public University in Kenya with only one faculty of 83 students. Since then it has witnessed phenomenal growth in terms of student numbers, staff, academic programmes and physical infrastructure. Currently there are more than 40,000 students enrolled in 15 Schools which offer diversified academic programmes for undergraduate, Masters and Doctorate levels. The University has been at the forefront in expansion of university education by rolling out more academic programmes which are tailored to suit the market needs and the establishment of constituent colleges and satellite campuses in various parts of the country to ensure university education is accessible to more Kenyans.
Similarly, as a mentoring University, Moi University is expected to provide mentorship through:
(i) Provision of relevant and accredited Academic programmes for implementation by BUC.
(ii) Quality assurance in teaching of Academic programmes.
(iii) Providing academic leadership to BUC.
BUC is a community built upon the valued relationships among students, staff, faculty, the alumni and other stakeholders. At the core of these relationships are our core values that lead to the realization of our corporate culture and good governance. These are:

(iv) Respect: For diversity and the dignity of the individual, as well as attaching a premium to the contributions of each and every player regardless of one’s status in the University.
(v) Commitment: To continuously improve on the quality of the services offered with the goal of assuring longevity and excellence of the University.
