School of Arts and Social Sciences

The School of Arts & Social Sciences (SASS) provides quality and innovative educational environment for nurturing knowledge, skills and attitudes in Humanities and Social Sciences. Students admitted to SASS are prepared to pursue career paths in Communications, Media, Publication, Public Relations, Translation, Literature and Languages, Religion and Theology, Governance and Public Administration, Social Work and Community Development as well as in Physical, Human and Environmental Geography. The School emphasizes interdisciplinary approach and practical/field/industrial attachment to knowledge acquisition, research and training. The School currently has three departments, namely the Department of Arts, Governance and Communication Studies; the Department of Geography, Environment and Development Studies, and the Department of Religion, Culture and Gender Studies.

Dr. Mohammed S. Mraja

Dean School of Arts and Social Sciences

 Dr. Mohamed Mraja is the Dean, School of Arts & Social Sciences, Bomet University College (BUC). He is a DAAD alumnus who obtained his PhD in Islamic studies from the Albert Ludwigs University, Freiburg, Germany. His is a Postdoc Fellow of the University of Cape Town, South Africa and an established Researcher with the Africa Multiple Cluster of Excellence, University of Bayreuth, Germany. Dr. Mraja is also a Panelist in the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) in the area of Religious Education. His research interests include Religion and Marriage, Family law, Education, Environment, Health, Radicalization and Muslim Religious Authorities. Chembea

Dr. Suleiman A. Chembea

Chair, Department of Arts, Languages and Communication Studies - AL&CS

Dr. Chembea holds a PhD in Islamic studies from the University of Bayreuth, Germany; a Master of Arts in Religion and a Bachelor of Education (Arts), both from Moi University, Kenya. His research interests lay in the interface between Muslim Religious Endowments (Awqaf) and Muslim Social welfare politics in secular state milieus; on Muslim-Christian relations; on Religion and migration and Religious extremism. Dr. Chembea held the position of Visiting Research Fellow at the African Studies Center, (ASC), Leiden, University of Netherlands in 2019 as well as the Early Career Researcher of Islam in Africa, a mentorship program of the Institute of Islamic Thought in Africa (ISITA), Northwestern University, Chicago, Illinois since 2019. Mr. Kenneth Uki

Mr. Kenneth Uki holds a Master of Philosophy in Communication Studies from Moi University and a Bachelor of Arts in English and History from the University of Eastern Africa, Baraton, Kenya. He is currently pursuing a PhD in Communication Studies at Rongo University while serving as a Tutorial Fellow in the Department  of Arts, Governance and Communication Studies, BUC. Mr. Uki has a wealth of experience lecturing in Language and Communication in the areas of Management, Editing, Customer Care Management, Event Planning, Script and Promotional Materials Origination, Marketing, Public and Media Relations Activities. Koech

Mr. Leonard Koech

Mr. Leonard Koech holds a Master of Arts in Communication (Development Communication) from Daystar University, Kenya and a Bachelor of Science in Communication and Journalism from Moi University. He is currently undertaking Doctoral studies in Communication Studies at Rongo University. He is a Member of the International Communication Association (ICA) and the Public Relations Society of Kenya (PRSK). His research interests include Communication for Development and Social Change, Digital Media and Rural Development as well as Social Media Interactions. He is serving as a Tutorial Fellow in the Department of Arts, Governance and Communication Studies, undertaking research and teaching in Communication studies. Mr. Simion Korir

Mr. Simion Korir holds a Master of Arts in Religious Studies from Urbaniana University, Italy; a Master of Arts in International Law and Human Rights from Coventry University, United Kingdom; a Post Graduate Diploma in Education from Moi University, Kenya; Bachelor of Arts in Theology and a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy both from Urbaniana University, Italy. He is presently pursuing a PhD Degree in Religious Studies at Moi University. Mr. Korir is a Tutorial Fellow in the Department  of Arts, Governance and Communication Studies. His research interests include Peacebuilding in Religious Perspective; Gender Equality and Dignity from the Christian viewpoint; Youth involvement in Religious, Social, Economic, Environmental and Technological Development as well as Emerging concerns in relation to Christian perspective. Mr. Bernard Otieno Onyango

School Administrative Assistant

Mr. Benard Otieno Onyango holds a Bachelor of Education (Arts) from University of Kabianga, Kenya. Before joining Bomet University College, he served as an employee of the Teachers’ Service Commission (TSC) St. Paul Akoko Secondary School. He is also experienced in Research, Mapping, Editing and Supervision. Mr. Onyango served as Enumerator with the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) specializing in Data entry, editing, and analysis; as well as a Research Assistant in the MAMASASHA programme of the International Potato Centre (CIP), Bungoma County.
