Bomet University College is the new host of air quality measurement equipment. The project HewaSafi, funded by the Swiss Academy of Science’s Commission on Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics, – installed three simple optical particle counters, supplemented by basic carbon dioxide sensors at Nairobi (KMD Headquarters), Mogogosiek Tea Factory and Huduma Centre (Bomet County). The equipment measures and relays the state of air quality at the three (3) sites to a publicly available web site (https://www.iqair.com/air-quality-map ). Bomet University College will host the display on which data shall be relayed real-time. While it could not provide reference instrumentation, the HewaSafi project aims at increasing awareness on air quality among students and staff; and promote research and education in Geography and Environmental studies. The project team includes Mr. Constance Okuku (Kenya Meteorological Department), Dr. Wambongo Recha (Bomet University College), Mr. Joseph Mukola (Kenya Meteorological Department), and Dr. Jörg Klausen (MeteoSwiss). While meeting the project team on October 31 st 2023 at the University College grounds, the Ag. Principal Prof. Loise Maru thanked the team for the initiative and lauded them for making a contribution to the start of air quality (AQ) measurements in Bomet County. Prof Maru noted that research and awareness on air quality will also contribute to mitigation of climate change – a global challenge.
